Origins of mosaic art
Unsurprisingly, mosaics have such a rich history. It almost feels like they’re been around forever! The oldest mosaic known to man, dates back to the 3rd millennium BCE, in a temple in Mesopotamia. Since then, they have been a long-standing art craft, having passed through ancient Rome and Greece.
The traditional technique for creating mosaics includes combining small pieces of coloured stones and tiles. The end product is a beautiful image typically used as a wall decoration or sculpture.
Roman mosaics in particular were used to decorate the walls and floors of buildings throughout the Roman empire. Some of these mosaics are still being discovered today – more recently in London.
